The big fat religious thread...

Well I remember having oh so long of arguments with LBG on the old forums under this topic, so here goes again.

What are you views on god/religion/church etc.?

...

Let the conflict begin! :D

It seems reasonable to me that there is a Higher Power or creative force that kick-started creation. Life doesn't strike me as being purely driven by Survival of the Fittest.

What I don't understand or really get into is the need to be bogged down in rituals and sacrements. If someone tells me there is a God then I say "Hey that's great." and go about my business. I soppose the practice of the rituals is just a way for people to meditate and feel more spiritual about their belief in their Deity. That's fine as long as you don't tell me I'll go to Hell if I don't go to your Church.

Also here are two particular things I don't get.

1. Being approached by a total stranger and being asked the akward question "Are you saved?". It's akward because I don't undstand what they're talking about. Saved? From what? Is the Devil gonna get me?

2. "Jesus died for our sins." The events of Easter are perplexing to me. Jesus, being a divine being, knew the Romans would crusify him but did nothing to stop it even though he easily could have done so since he is the freakin son of God. However by allowing himself to die he gets to pull his Rise From The Grave trick. Did he let himself go through the misery of being killed just as an excuse to perform that particular miracle and hence prove without a doubt he is Christ? That still doesn't really fit the "Died for our sins." quote though. Perhaps then he was a human sacrifice to God of some kind? Maybe someone else here can clarify this for me. Regardless of the reason it seems strange and brutal for God to apparently make his son go through that.

I believe I don't understand anything... I am primarily athiest, but if there is a God I'm sure he's more concerened about our welfare rather than our deeds. I'm sure anyone with chilren or pets can understand that.

Organized religion is just a route to power.

BTW. This is kind of a tangent from the topic but I'd recommend any comic book fans read the graphic novels of the Preacher comic from DC Vertigo. Garth Ennis gives an interesting look at religious through one man's literal hunt for God to make him take responsibility for his creation.

LoL, ye good olde days, LedByGod(LBG) think's he's too cool to post here now, it was like a 3-way debate between you, him, and adam.
i remember that but i wasnt all that good about debating cause im not one who goes and reads bibles and goes to churches but i do have my small opinions...

you rang?

LOL :D

i can help you out videodrome. to be saved is to be saved from Gods wrath. see, everything evil will be judged. even if you lived your whole life as a pretty good person, you are infected with evil just because you are not capable of living sinless. in order for you te get safe from gods wrath, you need to be sinless...

that is where Jesus dying for your sins comes in. Jesus lived and died sinless. now, when he died, there was a problem. you see, death is a result of sin. but Jesus was sinless. soo, by him dying, it opened a sort of loophole for the rest of us. you should die and be condemned because you have sinned within your life. but... there is a way to allow Jesus to have died for you personally so that you can have eternal life. umm... let me take a step back and repost in a while to try to make it clear for you. i understand that this is all foreign to you so i am going to try to make it as easy to understand as possible. i'll post again in a while.

yeah. but he is also just. if he wasnt just, he couldnt be perfect. so, your deeds are totally held accountable. but, there is a way to have your slate cleaned.

Well if it turns out that I'm not saved, do I get to choose the form of God's Wrath?

If so, I pick this................

ok, i'm back.

there is one God. all the rest are not rael. people just made them up because it fit what they wanted to believe. and, since everything based on man crumbles, every religion will cumble with it's beliefs after a little study. the one true God (YHWH) wants us all to have a relationship with him and wants our lives to be full of satisfaction and joy. the problem is that every one of us is born seperated from God cause of the sin of our great grand pappy adam. Jesus died so that we could once again have a relationship with God and so that our sins could be removed from us. now, if you dont accept Jesus and his death into your life, and if you dont live with an intimate relationship with God, you will die with your sins and cannot enter heaven due to your sins. God did all he could so that this will not happen. he made everything real clear and just a little personal study will reveal truth from the lies.

and, the bible is as relevant today as it was when it was first written. it is also 100% accurat in context and you cannot prove me wrong on this.

So all the people who died before the crusifixion happened are screwed! Or is Jesus' death retroactive?

the people who died before the resurrection that had a relationship with God knew that regardless of how good they did, they could not measure up to God's holiness and that God was going to make a way for them to enter into God's fellowship. they believed this cause the prophets spoke of a messiah who would come and save Gods people. actually, the very first prophecy of Jesus is in genesis chapter 3 or 4. see, they were looking forward to that hope and had faith in Jesus by looking ahead towards the promise. it is like Jesus' death was at one point in time. today, we look back at it. the people who were around beforehand looked forward towards it.

Ok well I'll just add that I don't really believe that the story of Adam and Eve was meant to be taken literally, but we debated for quite a while last time about that and we didn't really get any where.

The reason I think Adam and Eve's tale is just a figurative story is simple: After Cain killed Able, he was banished to wander the earth, where anyone he met would not shelter or help him. This suggests the idea of there being many other people/civilizations/populated areas other than Adam and Eve's abode.

I believe the point of the story of Adam and Eve was to say that Man (A & E) disobeyed God after being tempted by the Devil. Then God discontinued his total protection of Mankind and set them loose to work for themselves and to toil and labor for the rest of their lives.

Feel free to disagree.

I'm going to make an attempt to explain this right...

Jesus' destined path was to eventually die. Jesus knew this was his Father's plan for him and he accepted it.

Jesus' death was the ultimate sacrifice. It was the most incredibly powerful expression of love and caring that could have been made. He did this to pay for all the sins that people had and would commit. According to the Bible, after Jesus had done this, the gates of Heaven were opened and everyone who had previously died (i.e. Moses, Abraham, etc.) was taken from Limbo and accepted into Heaven. Do not be confused. The point of Jesus' death was not just to rise again.

And as to the question of why Jesus did not do anything to stop the Romans: I believe he couldn't have. He was human, just like any other person. Before performing miracles, he always prayed to God the Father, asking Him to bestoy a miracle on some particular person. Jesus himself did not have the power. Instead, it was God the Father that was almighty and all-powerful.

When Jesus rose from the dead, it was his divine form that walked the earth. This accounts for his ability to walk through walls and rise into the sky miraculously. Now he was actually God, not a human with Godly conciousness.

Again, feel free to disagree or offer your own opinions.

Okay. So if you try to live a good life (even though that's not possible since we are flawed humans) and you accept Jesus' sacrifice then you get into Heaven? Sounds easy enough.
