What is wrong with the cube?

Let me start off by saying that my views on this topic had started a huge riot in my past forums. But this is how I feel.

I love Nintendo, first off. I have been a fan since their early pre-nes days with Doney Kong, etc. But you have to admit that they have made some mistakes both in the past and with the Gamecube. With the gamecube, they are probably the only console that doesn't actively support on-line games. Sure they have a couple, but nothing really spectacular. I wonder every day why they released a freaking modem if they don't plan on using it. In my view, if Nintendo could incorporate the modem in to newer games alongisde the great ones coming out, Nintendo could really turn this console around. As it is, I have reported in the past, that I had heard rumors of Gamecube's impending failure, and Nintendo going the way of Sega. Sure Nintendo has about 3 billion in the bank from world wide sales, but most of that is from the Gameboy. The gamecube is in third place!
How much profit can it really be pulling down?
To me, alot of the mistakes Nntendo HAS made with the cube are remiscent of Sega's mistakes.
Now, Nintendo has slightly alleviated some of those problems, what with a new vp of marketing, and some killer apps, Metroid Prime 2, Pikmin2, and PAPERMario.
But Nintendo has alot more to do if they hope to regain more of the market share that they once enjoyed with the snes, and the nes.

Next time, what is wrong with the original nes, and its' damn blinking grey screen, and the failed Virtual Boy.
In retrospect, I imagine that these comments caused so much friction because they were posted on a predominetly Nintendo forum. But those retards couldn't even admit that mistakes were made.....

Re: What is wrong with the cube?

I personally think Nintendo's biggest mistake was making the gamecube to meet their own needs and no one else’s. Look at their controller, look at their mini disc format. Developing for consoles should be seamless. But with the cube, developers are forced to change their ways in order to conform to the cube. Even if that means completely remapping their button scheme to match Nintendo’s odd controller. Also, because of their mini disc format, special presses are needed to create the actual disc. Having to deal with Nintendo was mandatory, because they would now have to go through Nintendo in order to get discs produced. And because of this, Nintendo would probably get a nice chunk of money. Online would help, but what would they have, now, that could be online? Pikman? Mario tennis? Kart racing? These are not good enough. This IS Nintendo afterall, and Nintendo has a habit of taking forever to make their own brand of games. Just imagine if they were to go back and rethink of their online stragety at this point in time. We wouldn't see any decent first party online games for years. This is why third party is so important, and mentioned, they completely scared them away with their console.

All Nintendo needs to do in the next gen, is to make a console that everyone, and anyone can develop for. This starts off my them using a standard DVD format, or looking forward with HDdvd or even BlueRay, as they will be stardard in the furture. (I'm guessing)

And, they will hardly go out of business, because of their portables. They could re-release the first version of gameboy, with added sparkles, and it will somehow sell millions.

Sega's biggest problem is that they're too dependent on their own formats as well. They have always made consoles, and arcade boards to meet their needs. So when they got out of the hardware business, and were forced to work with consoles that for once they had no say on, they pretty much folded. Granted, Sega is so versatile, in that, they create pretty much every genre of game out there, and they do it well. But having to create games for consoles that they are not familiar with hurts them. I know all first party Sega Developers wish DC was still alive, or that Sega would create a DC 2. But it’s a little too late.

Yes. Finally, someone agress with me about the format of the discs for the gamecube. That is how Nintendo has always been though. With the 64, they stubbornly stuck with the cart format while Sony and sega used discs. Not onlt did this mean that the 64 games were more expensive, and heild less memory than discs, it also prohibited Sqaare or any rpg giant to effectively make a rpg for the 64. Nintendo of America shelved the idea of bringing the 64 dd to the states, which would have added much needed memory to the 64.

Nintendo has always wanted to maintain control of every aspect of their console.
Remember the vaporware, snes cd-rom that both Sony and Nintendo had announced. From what I recall, Sony wanted to use regualr cds, while Nintendo wanted to use some custom sit, like with the cube.

Re: What is wrong with the cube?

IMO the thing thats wrong with the gamecube is that i'm twenty and not twelve. that system is made for little kids

Re: What is wrong with the cube?

Well, a majority of the cubes' games are geared towards young kids. Aside from Eternal Darkness, I cannot name another "adult" game off the top of my head.

And the controller, even looks like a freaking fisher price toy. Not to mention the little handle on the top of the console.

Re: What is wrong with the cube?

Metroid Prime & Resident Evil sure aren't kiddy. But I agree to a degree that too many Nintendo games focus on a younger market or the graphics style aren't "mature" enough for alot of gamers.

Re: What is wrong with the cube?

Well, Artifical has a good point, most of the GameCube games are rated E for everyone :) . It is setup up for the younger kids, nothing against you Nasty ;) because the only Rated T game is what Smiley said and Resident Evil. XBox and PlayStation have games where chicks are half naked playing beach volleyball..:p

And another good point..

Re: What is wrong with the cube?

I would love to see a sequel to Eternal Darkness. However, since I know the game did not sell enough to merit one, I doubt we will.
Plus I heard that Silicon Knightsm the developers, has split with Nintendo.

Re: What is wrong with the cube?

With nintendo....we won't see many killing, bloody, cblow their heads off, type of games as we do with the other consoles. I think that might also be the reason they are in third??

Re: What is wrong with the cube?

Yeah, Silicon Knights split with Nintendo, although they still might make games for them. They did the remake of Metal Gear. Twin Snakes I believed it was called. Pretty impressive looking title. The new Resident Evil looks amazing, but there's no way I'm going to fork over the money just to play that one game. Gamecube is still pricey up here.

I'm still waiting to see if Rare's departure will hurt them, but it looks like it won't. Star Fox was the only game that looked good to me, early on. And Rare pretty much keep the N64 on it's feet. Lets not forget the new life they brought to the SNES, with donkey kong country. However, it doesn't seem like they will be that big of an impact to Microsoft as they were to Nintendo. Too many big titles that Rare will have to compete against.

Re: What is wrong with the cube?

Not only did Rare breath new life into the snes, they allowed Nintendo to bleed every dollar bill from the snes before switching to their new console, the 64.
To me, what Rare was capable of doing with the snes with games like Donkey Kong contry and Killer Instinct, was nothing short of amazing. Rare's titles, actually overshadowed MOST 32 bit games offered by Sega and Sony.

I agree that Star Foz adventure was an exceptional title. However, since Rare's departure, the newest star Fox planned is what I want from the franchise. From what I have seen, the newer SF will resemble the snes game.
