Nightcrawler's Profile
Real Name: Kurt Wagner
Class: mutant
Nationality: German
Occupation: former gypsy/circus performer , now adventurer
Affiliations: possible son to Mystique , possible "brother" to Rogue/Graydon Creed , member of X-men , leader of Excalibur.
Scale of Operations: formerly Germany, then United States, then England, now Muir Island/worldwide
Powers: Nightcrawler's mutant physiology gives him a elfish appearance, with dark blue velvet-like fur, pointed ears, and pupiless yellow eyes. (His dark fur allows him to blend almost imperceptibly into shadows.) He is also able to teleport himself, and to a certain extent, others in contact with him, with a loud "bamf," entering briefly into another dimension and exiting nearly instantaneously at his destination. (He must know the precise destination or have been there before to teleport safely.) Kurt is an experienced acrobat and an accomplished fencer. In addition, Nightcrawler can cling and crawl on walls and ceilings.
History: Kurt Wagner was born with certain unusual physical characteristics, but his power of teleportation did not emerge until puberty. Less than an hour after his birth, Wagner was found in a small roadside shelter in the Bavarian Alps by Margali Szardos, a sorceress and gypsy queen. She found his father, Eric Wagner, dead of a heart attack on the road outside. Margali is said to have found Wagner's mother lying next to the baby and dying, but this assertion has been called into question, and it was later revealed that the villain Mystique may have been his biological mother. Margali took the baby to the small Bavarian circus where she worked as a fortuneteller as a "cover" for her activities as a sorceress. Wagner was never legally adopted by anyone, but was raised by all the members of the circus, who had no prejudices against "freaks." Margali acted as Wagner's unofficial foster mother.
Wagner grew up happily in the circus, and his two closest friends were Margali's natural children, Stefan and Jimaine. Long before his teleportation power emerged, Wagner had tremendous natural agility, and by adolescence he had become the circus's star acrobat and aerial artist. Audiences assumed that he was a normal-looking human being wearing a demon-like costume.
Years later, the Texas millionaire Amos Jardine, who ran a large circus based in Florida, heard of the circus Wagner worked for and bought it. Jardine intended to move its best acts into his American circus. However, he demanded that Wagner be placed in the circus's freak show. Appalled, Wagner quit and made his way towards Winzeldorf, Germany, where Stefan was. He discovered that Stefan had gone mad and had brutally slain several children. Two nights after leaving the circus, Wagner found Stefan and fought him, hoping to stop his rampage. In the course of the struggle, Wagner unintentionally broke Stefan's neck. Wagner was discovered by the villagers, who assumed him to be a demon who was responsible for the child killings. They were about to kill him when they were all psionically paralyzed by Professor Charles Xavier, who had come to recruit Wagner into his band of clandestine mutant freedom fighters known as the X-Men. Wagner agreed to join the group, but before they left for America, he and Xavier went to the Bavarian circus so that Wagner could explain to Margali about Stefan's death. However, Margali was not there, and she held Wagner responsible for murdering Stefan.
Wagner joined the X-men with the code-name Nightcrawler. He served with the team for a long tenure, forming deep relationships with his teammates. Years later, Wagner reunited with Jimaine, who now lives in the United States under the name Amanda Sefton. He subsequently confronted Margali, and she learned the truth of Stefan's death, reconciling with Wagner. Wagner and Sefton began a romantic relationship, which eventually tapered off over the years.
After many years, Wagner was severely wounded in battle with the villainous Marauders. He was sent to the Scottish Muir Island research facility to recuperate, and he was there when the X-Men were apparently killed in Dallas. At first, he felt strong guilt which led to a streak of self-destructive behavior. The sudden appearance of the alien Gatecrasher and the Technet, pursuing former X-man Rachel Summers (then, Phoenix), restored Wagner's sense of purpose. He, along various heroes, rescued Phoenix, and stayed with them to form the English team Excalibur, often acting as team leader.
Staying with Excalibur throughout their tenure, Nightcrawler discovered that much of these experiences were manufactured under a plot by Merlin of Otherworld, attempting to control all the omniverse. Nightcrawler was later instrumental in stopping Merlin and restoring reality, and elected to stay with Excalibur after the adventures were over, soon moving their base to Muir Island. Over time, Wagner developed a romantic relationship with teammate Cerise, although she soon left the team for deep space. About this time, he learned the "truth" about his connection with Mystique, and fought a final battle against Szardos with Amanda Sefton. He continues to adventure alongside and lead Excalibur. Later, he rekindled his romance with Amanda Sefton, now called Daytripper.
Excalibur continued adventuring for many months, but Excalibur was disbanded around the time of Captain Britian and Meggan's wedding. Wagner, along with other Excalibur members, returned to the X-men, and served with them for several adventures.
Eventually, however, Wagner left the X-men to rededicate himself with his Catholic faith. Wagenr spent several months in preparation for becoming a priest, but he was attacked by the X-men's villains, the Neo, before he complete his final studies. Wagner sought out former X-man Cecilia Reyes for his injuries, and together they eluded the Neo until they were finally rescued by the X-men, who were finally able to escape the Neo. Wagner rejoined the X-men and continues to serve with them.
On a mission to rescue the X-Men's Stacy X from the evil Church of Humanity, Wagner encountered the mysterious Supreme Pontiff, who did something to Wagner that caused a severe personality shift. He became a brooding pessimist and afterwards a flamboyant showoff. No one, not even Wagner himself, appears to be fully aware of what exactly happened and why he is acting this way.
