Phoenix, is Jean Grey when her powers have evolved far beyond what she can do, and in the comics at first it is a clone and explaining the whole thing is confusing but the clone goes evil and once they found out it's not the real her, they find the real Jean.

Movie wise(since the movie doesn't follow the comic directly) let's just say she will more then likely be alive and with her psychic powers in ULTRA ASS KICKING MODE

Excalibur is a team that is later formed by Night Crawler..

Excalibur was a team of superhuman champions operating within the United Kingdom, most of whom were superhuman mutants. The team was organized with the goals of carrying out the dream of Professor Charles Xavier, the founder of the X-Men, who hoped for peace between humans and mutants by having his team defend humanity against a variety of threats, particularly attacks by superhumanly powerful criminals.

As a result of injuries sustained during the massacre of the mutant Morlocks by the assassins known as the Marauders, two of the X-Men, Shadowcat and Nightcrawler, were hospitalized at the research base of Doctor Moira MacTaggert on the Muir Island mutant research facility off the coast of Scotland. Back in the United States, the active members of the X-Men were seemingly killed in their battle against the powerful mystical entity called the Adversary. The news of the X-Men's survival was kept secret even from Nightcrawler and Shadowcat, and the two mourned the apparent deaths of their teammates.

About the same time, the former X-Man, Rachel Summers, then known as the Phoenix, escaped from the dimension ruled by the villainous Mojo, arriving in London, England, and pursued by creatures called Warwolves. A premonition of her arrival was witnessed by the hero Meggan, but as her partner, Captain Britain, was mourning his sister's disappearance with the rest of the X-Men, she flew to their allies, Nightcrawler and Shadowcat. Summers was also being hunted by the alien mercenaries of the Technet, who were contracted to kill Phoenix after being told they were told she was a threat to the multi-verse. However, the Technet encountered Meggan, Nightcrawler, and Shadowcat, subduing them and forcing Nightcrawler to flee to Captain Britain for aid. A three-way battle ensued among the heroes, the Technet, and the Warwolves, until the heroes managed to thwart their foes and rescue Phoenix. United in victory, Excalibur was born, dedicating themselves to carrying on the legacy of the X-Men. Shortly afterwards, the team established their headquarters in Captain Britain's lighthouse.

Soon, Excalibur came into possession of the robotic Widget after an encounter with the villains known as the Crazy Gang,. The robot later accidentally transported the team to an alternate dimension, and Excalibur was forced to hop from one alternate dimension to another in a series of adventures before they found their way back home.

Excalibur remained together for several years of adventuring, even after the X-Men had revealed their presence to their friends.

More recently, Phoenix was again targeted by the Technet, who nearly succeeded in defeating the team if not for the intervention of the multi-versal guardian, Saturnyne, who originally hired Technet but called them off at the last second. Intrigued, Rachel Summers embarked on a vision quest for her own memories, joined by Meggan in a search for her own roots. The Technet disbanded, and many of its members took up residence in Excalibur's lighthouse. During this time, the lighthouse experienced many fluctuations in space and time, drawing many beings to it, such as Kylun and Cerise, both of whom became allies of Excalibur. Another being, Necrom, hoped to use the power of the Anti-Phoenix to gain ultimate power.

The fluctuations were signals of a convergence of realities. The existence of the realities normally caused an energy matrix that powered the corps of Captain Britains on the various the alternate worlds, but the convergence threatened to collapse and draw all planes of reality together with disastrous results. The members of Excalibur stumbled upon their true purpose, to bodily merge and navigate the multi-verse, redirecting the power generated by the convergence in order to stabilize the lattice of realties once more. Excalibur also defeated Necrom, but Phoenix nearly died in the attempt.

Then, Merlyn, ruler of Otherworld and manipulator of the energy matrix created by the existence of realities, revealed to Excalibur that he orchestrated events through his daughter Roma to form Excalibur, manipulating all of their early activities from formation to dimension-hopping, to prepare for the moment they saved the multi-verse. Merlyn hoped to keep the realities permanently aligned so as to gain ultimate power through the energy matrix, but Excalibur destroyed their lighthouse, the linchpin of all realities, allowing the energy matrix to fade, instead. Roma allowed Excalibur and their allies to return to Captain Britain's boyhood mansion.

Excalibur proceeded to be upset by many changes, as many of their members were rendered incapacitated or left active duty. Captain Britain, in particular, was lost to the time stream after a time-travelling adventure, and Meggan was left in a near-catatonic state in grief. Nightcrawler and Shadowcat were contacted by the X-Men to help them fight the villainous Acolytes of Magento, especially as one of their member and friend of Shadowcat, Colossus, had become an Acolyte himself. The encounter took place on Muir Isle, and afterward, Excalibur asked if they could be based there, acting as an extension of Moira MacTaggert's work at the research facility as well as fighting against superpowered menaces.

During their subsequent adventures, Excalibur fought many superhuman villains and was also involved in fighting such threats as those against the mutant-killing Legacy Virus. Over time, they were joined by other heroes-- Daytripper (now, Magik), Colossus, Douglock, Wolfsbane, and Pete Wisdom. Captain Britain and Meggan had also returned to the team, and were finally married months later.

After the wedding of Captain Britain and Meggan, Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, and Colossus decided to return to the United States and rejoin the X-Men. Captain Britain and Meggan departed for their honeymoon, and Excalibur was disbanded.

Deep plot! Damn... thanks for takin the time to explain it... maybe now I'll get a bit more out of the movie. :)
 
Well both of the movies storyline's ARE ENTIRELY different from the comic minus a few things and the character's + their powers for the most part. That's why you hear people who read the comics complaining why some of their favorite thing's will probably never be shown on the big screen.
 
...oh yeah Sonic, I read at the Marvel Superhero directory that Cyclops has a button in his glove, and the button on his visor is just a manual override. They should use the glove thing in the movie, its kickass.
