NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Two months ago, Microsoft spoke glowingly of bridging the gap between the PC and Xbox. Now the company is considering erasing that gap completely.

While Microsoft has publicly avoided discussing its next generation machine, it has been quietly conducting studies on the consumer appeal of a hybrid device that would play both PC and Xbox games.

"We would be remiss if we didn't look at consumer scenarios that take advantage of our strengths," said Peter Moore, corporate vice president of worldwide marketing and publishing for Microsoft's home and entertainment division. "[But] this is one amongst many, many other consumer scenarios that we're looking at."

"One slide describes the unit, which would require a PC monitor or high definition television, as being backward compatible with current and next-generation Xbox titles. It would also play PC games and include a fully functional version of Windows, CD burner, DVD player (with remote control), built-in access to Xbox Live and a hard drive. Control-wise, the system would come with both a keyboard and mouse and a standard Xbox controller. The price point this particular study tested was $599. "

Thats almost as much as a desktop....would any of you buy it at that price?

That's hilarious, with all the power at the hands of PC game makers you'd think PC games would be leaps and bounds beyond console games and yet all you see is the same old shit. PC game makers for the most part lack creativity and originality. Most PC games = teh boring!

If you're willing to pay twice as much for what most consoles launch at go right ahead, seems wastefull IMO.

PC Games ARE leaps and bounds ahead of Console games, take Halo for instance... there had been a ton of PC titles with more than what Halo had to offer way before Halo was even thought of. But the reason you see so many more crappy PC games is becuase there are a shit load more developers for the PC then any console, a group of guys like us can get together and develope a game. So the odds of more crap being spit out are higher, but so are the odds of more great games.

Well...if they can create a good setup, to where it has a great controller and monitor, and of course the price goes down, then it my be a good buy??

Like Vic said....keyboards suck as controllers.. :D

Play any FPS against me with a controler and I will use a KB & Mouse and I am guaranteed to kick your ass. I do like controlers though and something in my living room so that I can lay on the couch and play, but I do know a KB & Mouse is better for certain types of games. The whole monitor thing isn't an issue with me, I have an HDTV that isn't being used to it's full potential. Even with the stupid HDTV pack I have most of the Xbox games are not what I want them to be. I WANT 1080i DAMNIT!

Don't get me worng....when using a mouse for a game....it alot better then a controller...but I still dislike the keyboard used as a controller for the buttons..:(

Very true. The only use I've found for keyboard and mouse is when playing strategy or roleplaying games (then again I've never been very good with the twitch response with FPS on computer). Controllers become an extension of your hands, while keyboards are an extension of . . . your fingers. Sure, it's great being able to map every conceivable spell, sword, or movement to individuals keys, but doesn't that make things too easy?

I'm sorry but gaming without my thumbs is a pain in the ass! Even when I game at the arcade I'm not nearly as good because I have to use fingers which are slow to respond unlike my thumbs. Plus using a KB & Mouse gives me carpal tunnel like pain with the quickness yet I can game with a good conrtoller all day and not get any pain in my hands.

Well like I said..I like using a controller better then a keyboard. Mouse is good to have if its just used alone, but when you have to use some of the keys on the keyboard..then it becomes a pain.

PC has too much power for the Xbox.... it couldn't work.
