What are the best movie adaptions?

With the recent conclusion to The Lord of the Rings I think it did a good job following the story. Scene cuts were regrettable but necessary. Despite that though I think it stayed very true to the book. There are also the special edition DVDs available to.

Aside from Tolkien there are also the numerous adaptions of Stephen King novels. I think the movie version of Pet Semetary stayed close to the book and was a good horror movie. I feel the same for The Dead Zone. David Cronenberg, Stephen King, Martin Sheen, and Christopher Walken combine to bring about a great film and story.

The Shining is a great movie thanks to director Stanley Kubrick and of course Jack Nicholson, but it took a lot of unnecessary liberties with the story so I don't think it was a good story adaption. I think for some reason Kubrick decided to purposefully bend the story to fit his own personel vision and not that of King's.

One of the worst adaptions IMO is the John Steakley novel Vampire$ which became the John Carpenter movie starring James Woods. This is one of my favorite vampire stories but the movie had massive sweeping changes to it that were unnecessary. For example the main villain Valek does not even exist in the book at all. About the only thing the two have in common is the mercenary group hunting vampires for the Vatican. The one thing I do give this movie credit for is the team leader was very well cast with actor James Woods. Whenever I read the story now I can still envision him in the role of Jack Crow barking orders. "Rock and Roll!!"
