Well, it looks like it's offical. Blue Ray for PS3...

What do you guys think? Rumor has it that Microsoft might go with HD DVD, (who the hell knows what Nintendo is up to)

Beta vs. VHS all over again?

Although currently, I don't see any developer filling out one of those discs anytime soon. But in the future, when blueray recorders become cheap, I do see people putting a ton of movies onto one disc. But that's only if it becomes the new standard. Sony is really brave to have done this. If there is one factor that would cause Sony to lose its dominance over Microsoft and Nintendo, it would be because Blueray does not become standard. But if it does, then Sony has won the next round.....simple as that.

Probably not that expensive, although everything costs more when it first comes out.

Like Nastyman! says, it's always in Sony's nature to do things their way. Their cameras uses its own version of the memory stick, and a better example is their minidisc music players. Instead of going with mp3 players, Sony decided to use their own format and hoped everyone would cave in and use their mini discs as the new standard for music. Same with Beta. Both did not catch on.

They're taking a massive risk with BlueRay. And they're hoping to bank in like they did with PS2. At the time, DVD was sort of new, and soon to be standard. And because PS2 had a DVD drive right out of the box, it sold.....in other words, they pretty much killed the Dreamcast with three simple letters....D.V.D. But Blueray is a bit different this time around. With PS2, dvds were already in homes, and within an arm's length of becoming standard. Who knows if Blueray will catch on. As Nastyman! said, HD DVD will turn this into a VHS vs Beta battle all over again, and you know who lost that round.

But that's just assuming Microsoft goes with HD DVD. If they go with Blue Ray as well, which I don't see happening, then they will pay royalties to Sony for using their format.

MS has already stated they are backing HD DVD.

Yeah. I gathered that much from the posts. And one thing that I admire about Sony, they are always attemtping to set the standard, whether it be gaming, or electronics. They are also willing to take chances, like the mini discs that was already mentioned. Sure, they didn't take off in the past, cause, imo, they were ahead of their time. I still own a mini disc recorder, and I have heard that the mini disc is the standard for music in Japan. But considering my source, I am unsure.

Well, HD in HD DVD is the same as a HDTV. Just better quality, but of course more money. So is BlueRay the same kind of dvd?

They both can store a lot more than regular DVDs. I think blue ray can store more than HD DVDs.

Sony has finally confirmed that they will use Blu-ray Disc technology in their next-generation PlayStation 3 (PS3) video game console. What is more surprising is that they also have plans to equip an upcoming version of their PlayStation 2 (PSX) video game console with a Blu-ray Disc player, so that consumers can enjoy both video games and high-definition movies. Sony hopes that the move will help jump-start the market for the new storage format. The announcement came at a press conference held by the Blu-ray Disc Founders (BDF), who also announced that they are in the process of finalizing the read-only version of the Blu-ray Disc format (BD-ROM) which they expect to be finished by September 30, 2004.

How much greater could these blue ray discs be than the standard. Aren't the standard capable of producing an hd image? And they are suppoused to handle more memory, is that what I am gathering?

When you first mentioned this, for some reason I thought you were talking about them dvd recorders. In reality, with tivo, I see no use for them. But that is beside the point...

I think blue ray is over 50 gigs dual layer. It's a huge leap from normal DVDs.

Wait. So if Sony is attempting to incorparate this technology into their next console, does that mean the PS3 is not that far off? Think about it. This technology is rather new, and unless they wait a couple years for the costs to decrease, and to establish a larger user base, then the technology willl be old by then.

I think I will be anti-technolgy, and stick with my standard dvds. Unless I can actually hear and see a substantial difference. In other words, I am cheap. Nuff said!

PS3 is confirmed to be shown at E3 2005. So I'm guessing a launch in 2006?

I'm guessing at price of $399-499. But then again, Microsoft is using new technology as well.

No way in hell will any new console will be above $300, that's the magic number and history has proved anything above that to be priced out of the american family household for a home console. Sony/MS/Nintendo would be absolute morons to not take the loss and sell their next gen consoles at at most $300.

Re: Well, it looks like it's offical. Blue Ray for PS3...

Word, We all saw what happened when 3do launced their console to the tune of $700 back in 1993. I believe it still holds the record for most bone-headed move, as well the most expensive console launch to date...
Coupled with the fact that most consumers called the 3do, "A 16-bit console on steroids."

Re: Well, it looks like it's offical. Blue Ray for PS3...

Sorry, forgot.

399 canadian = 299 american.
I was thinking bacon money again.

Price of a console doesn't bother me too much. Treat it right and it will be the only time you fork over the money for the console. I was worried about my Xbox dying and having to fork over another $399, but it's still working.

I bought the Saturn two weeks after their dumb ass suprise launch, and it cost me $599 not including tax. And in Ontario, we pay 15% tax on everything. As long as game prices stay the same. Back in the Saturn, and early DC days, I was paying $79-$89 a game, which is frigging way to high.

Re: Well, it looks like it's offical. Blue Ray for PS3...

The Saturn has been the most reliable console I have ever owned. I have had it for about 4 years now, and I have had bios chips installed, and have played a couple rpgs for hours upon hours, with no trouble.

The dc, on the other hand. That is another story, I am currently on my third one. I had bought one when they first debut in 1999, I believe. And foolishly followed my friends, and traded my dc in for a new PS2. Then I had one, where the damn laser required constant tweaking with the potentiometer, and then it crapped out on me. And the one I have now, I just replaced the freaking psu, for the third time. And every now and then, it will have intermittent resets, which I hate.

The same goes for the gamecube. I bought it used at Gamestop in Maryland, for $50. And I had to replace the laser myself, but afterwards, it is running like new....
Very very very reliable....
