Veronica Guerin review (spoilers)
:::: Minor Spoilers:::::
Starring Cate Blanchett. Based on the story of Irish reporter Veronica Geurin who took to many chances on her job and was killed by organized crime in 1996 for what she wrote.
Well I finally saw this movie and I think it was worth the wait. The style of the movie was a little different because it had such a strong focus on one particular character but that was okay. Cate Blanchett really held the film together though. Her character goes through hell in this movie. It was sad seeing her get brutalized so badly when she could have given in to the threats and turned away.
As this is based on a true story we know the main character will die. However some positive events occur in the aftermath of her murder. Outrage from the country brings about change and the drug trafficking is all but stamped out. At least she didn't die for nothing. The film also offers itself as a tribute to all journalists who have died in their line of work. It finishes with a statement saying that since Veronica Guerin's death in 1996 over 186 journalists have been killed.
As for Veronica herself I'm not sure what to think. In some ways she seemed to have been blinded by her passion in trying to make a difference in her community. Yet if she did back off then the deterioration of the city would continue as the police keep running into legal obstacles. I think her point of view was summed up well when she says "Do you think I want to do this? It's not something I want to do, it's something I have to do.".
