Television Series Vs. Epic Movie Trilogy's.

I've noticed something, sure you have your cult movies and epic movie trilogy's usually resulting in a 3 part 6 hour affair entailing the whole storyline which usually garners alot of fan's. But TV Fan's always seem to be more insane then those people but why?

Let's make a comparison of the pro's and con's:

Movies:

Pro's
+Have higher budget's

+More Focused work group

+Publicity

Con's

-Most movies average 2 hours

Television Show's:

Pro's
+Ton's more runtime, always more then any movie or even epic trilogy like star wars or LOTR

+If the show has a continually changing and engaging storyline(which most are just filler episode type show's), you will want to see the next episode and have one every week/every day.

Con's:

-Usually Lower Budgets especially for science fiction show's

-More people Involved isn't necessarily bad(writing wise) but continuity can be messed up occasionally and for this reason.

Now noticed how i highlighted the hour's of a television show? Why is it a big deal?

Let's take for example and i'm not picking on the movie because i myself enjoy it but take for example "The Matrix", once the 3rd episode/movie is released the time of the 3 combined is around 6 hours long of storyline. Not including some of the side stuff like the animatrix or comics.

Now take for example buffy(shut up it IS a good example reguardless of if you like the show or not), Since it recently had it's Series finale is in total 144 hours long of storyline not including the 4th and 5th upcoming season of it's own spin-off.

During those 6 hours people will of course enjoy the matrix and see the character's develop and see the end. But during the 144 hours available in a show like buffy you will see ton's more character development and alot more space for thing's to be done you get a continually arcing storyline and filler episodes you will understand as if only you would have to know the characters to get it. This applies to any show longer then the average trilogy stuff like farscape and buffy.

With these TV Shows (buffy, angel, farscape, and more) are perfect examples of how MORE seems to bring people more into this virtual universe. Movies have there storylines but they don't have as much but have a cinematic presentation that tv doesn't.

So that is in my opinion why fan's of TV show's seem to be more insane then movies.

Or how about Star Trek Vs. Star Wars?

Though there are movies I think the main thing that spawned Trekkies was the various TV series. In particular Next Generation.

Star Wars has a big film presence but no TV version really worth mentioning(cartoons and crummy TV specials). It does have quite a big fan following to but probably not quite as much as Star Trek.

I think star wars is popular in the sense their are those hardcore geeky fan's but it's something the public also enjoy's. Take for example the matrix, the average person isn't going to look really deep into stuff like fan's would. An example is the door's in the matrix, that could be compared to backdoors used in hacking on the pc but does the average movie goer know that probably not.

I think the thing with Star Trek was there is just so much out for it, personally im not into it, i prefer Star Wars cause Trek seems to be more about scientifically describing and analyzing thing's vs. star wars style of a story told in another universe.

I just think when there is alot more hours of film and footage to be seen the universes seem more real and have more to offer.
