Stephen King: FROM A BUICK 8 (review - some spoilers)
I picked this book up on a whim while shopping. I found the story very fascinating and couldn't put the book down.
First thing, this story is not even close to being another Christine. While Christine was a paranormal killing machine this particular car is more alien in it's nature. It resembes a 50s era Buick 8 Roadmaster that is left abandoned at a gas station in Western Pennsylvania. It's driver seemed to walk around the building and vanish leaving behind the mysterious vehicle.
At a glance it looks like a car but on closer inspection it has very strange characteristics. For one thing no dirt will stick to it. You could purposefully cram stones into the treads and they just fall or pop out. You can stab the tires and they reseal. You can scratch the paint up and it'll heal itself. Inside the car the dashboard in all fake. The is an outline that looks like a glover compartment but it can't be openned. The is a radio face but the dials don't turn on it. There is still something in the ignition but it's not a key, just a flat slab on metal. The steering wheel is oversized and made of wood like something that would come off of a yacht. Everything under the hood is arranged in a way that makes no sense. There is a V8 engine but no distributer cap. There is a car battery but there are no cables connecting it to anything, yet the dome light still turns on.
Later after it's impounded and placed in a storage shed behind a rural police station it gets even weirder. The car sometimes causes the temprature in the shed to drop. Sometimes it emits a weird hum similiar to what you hear coming from a power station and will interfere with radios or televisions. Eventually powerful blasts of light emit from it that make the shed look like an atomic flash. Also not long after the car has been there one of the police officers vanish while in the shed.
Finally things actually managed to get even more bizarre. After one of the "lightquakes" the trunk of the car opens up and spits out a strange alien creature. It seems that this Buick actually contains a somekind of gateway.
At this point I'll stop describing details of the story. I decided to describe some of what happens though because that's the best way I could think of to convey what the premise of this book is about. Also this isn't a typical menace like the clown in IT preying on victims. It's a strange alien mystery found by local police who are trying to figure out what it is and what to do with it.
After reading it though it's interesting to ponder what you would have done in their situation. What would you do if you found somekind of dimensional gateway in the shape of a 1950's Buick?
Also one final interesting note. This book was started around the same time that Stephen King was struck by a van while walking along a street in Maine.
