"Namco, Sega Confirm Merger Talks
By: D. F. Smith April 17, 2003 10:57 AM PDT
Namco and Sega both confirmed today that they are in talks regarding a possible merger, Bloomberg News reports. The potential Namco deal, first reported yesterday, is an alternative to the already-announced merger with pachinko giant Sammy.
``We've been in talks since last year about expanding our relationship, including a merger,'' Namco spokesman Shin Hasuya said.
According to the new reports, however, there is no deadline for a decision. The Sammy merger is not scheduled to be complete until May, which leaves Sega a little time to mull its options.
The Japanese stock market reacted very favorably to the prospect of a Namco merger, however, boosting Sega shares by some 16% on the first day after the news broke. By comparison, both Sega and Sammy stocks fell after the initial announcement of their merger. Analysts and investors view a merger between Sega and Namco as more beneficial to both companies, especially Sega, creating as it would a single company with much more unified interests and substantial power in the arcade and console videogame markets.
The Sammy deal is still on, however, and barring a significant change of plans on Sega's part, a Sega-Sammy merger is still the most likely outcome of this drama. Expect further updates as the situation warrants. "
I personally am hoping the Sammy deal falls through and Sega/Namco merge because I love those two companies (Konami aswell) and would love to see a renewed Sega front with tons of amazing games out in full force.
