Planet of the Apes

OK, I know this movie has been out for some time now, but I just seen it for the first time a little while ago. I have a question about the ending. Ok, when Marky Mark hopped into the escape pod Peroclese (sp?) his chimp, had brought to him, supposedly his on-board nav controls had retraced his journey (or his chimps, assuming they took the same trip) and plotted a return trip back to earth to his present time. For a split second the camera is looking at the "dashboard" of his pod which showed the years counting backwards from the year like 2600 something as he entered the worm hole and counted down to his present time (the year 2000 something) as he exited it. Well when he finally crash lands in front of the Lincoln monument and gets out, the face on the statue is that of Thade (I believe was his name, the main bad guy). Well, how is it that, believing that he is back in his own time, 600 some years PRIOR to the Oberon crashing into the alien planet, and that everyone is an Ape as if no time has really passed? Hopefully if you have seen this movie you know what I'm trying to explain. Im sure you scratched your head to that one as I did.
