Photoshop effects

I don't really know my way around photo shop very well and I'm attempting to create a ficticious company logo for an event we are having at school. The logo is for a company called Typhoon, of Typhoon Tech. I was wondering if anyone knew how to make an effect around the text of typhoon similar to the way the portal in stargate looks.

I don't have photoshop at my home, I'm using it at a computer at school, and so far I have gotten a picture of a got falling from a huge wave, and edited the guy out and just put the word Typhoon in cool text at the bottom. If anyone would like to give the logo a try, go right ahead.

You just want the ripple effect for the background with somekind of regular text in front of it? Or do you want the text itself to have the ripple as well? Maybe with the word Typhoon emerging from a ripple like that Stargate?

I think it would be cool to see it with the word coming out of the ripple portal look. But any personal ideas of yours are more than welcomed.

I'm not the best at Photoshop filters or effects, so this is the best I can do. Not practial though, because it took me too many steps to achive. :(

Although I know it's possible to make those kind of effects on Photoshop, (but I'm not sure how) the ones you see in that movie probably used softimage, or 3d studio. (might even be lightwave)

Monday when I go back to school, I will send the logo I made to myself and post it here and see what you guys think, and if you can make any improvements. I'm really wanting to incorporate a large breaking wave into the picture some how.

Yeah I was thinking of taking a crack at it with TrueSpace.

Well I should be getting Photoshop, so I think I'm going to start playing around with it. I used it a bit at school, and that damn thing is VERY complicated.

Yes it is VERY complicating. After a few years of practise it will get easier. The main thing is learning the basics : tools, palletes, etc. Just dont give up when it seems something is impossile to do. And spend 8 hours a day,EVERY day practising...

Well, I tried it and TrueSpace and it came close but not quite like the Stargate pic. Plus the bastard crashed on me and I lost my work.

That sucks, thanks for trying though. If I remember, I will get my work from the computer at school tomorrow and post it and see if anyone can do something with it.
