i just saw the movie 'open range'
this was a cool movie overall. a great western film, which i had absolutely 0 expectations for going into the theater. it starts off a bit slow plot-wise as they develop the story, but the landscapes are pretty awesome so the scene is set well. and then as the conflict in the plot begins to develop, the tone changes from serene to extremely suspenseful.
without spoilers, ill explain a bit of the movie's plot. it is 1882, and there is an ongoing feud between freegrazers (groups of men who graze their cattle along the open countryside, and spend their days wandering from campsite to campsite) and ranchers (people who graze their cattle on fenced in land). the ranchers dont like the freegrazers because they think the freegrazers will deplete the country's grass, even though the grazers have every right to be there. this is the basis of the conflict in the movie, and provides much suspense throughout as death and gunfights eventually ensue.
the movie seems to be very realistic as far as i can tell the way of life in 1882 was. there is a fair amount of gore (gunshot wounds mainly) throughout the movie, and i was very satisfied with the climax battle. the fighting looked real, and it didnt appear to be dramatized hollywood style (every shot in the gun battles dont hit their targets, etc.).
i recommend this movie to pretty much anyone. i went into the theater expecting to fall asleep, im not a fan of western movies at all, but anyone can enjoy the suspense in this movie. if this is the first you've really heard of it, it's most likely not the typical cowboy movie you're expecting.
