Guilty Gear XX (56k warning a few pics inside)
Being the lucky bastard I am I happened to stumble upon a free copy of Guilty Gear XX. First off I have always been a huge GG fan and own all 3 versions now. The game is best described as a Fast paced 2D fighter with amazing sprite animation, kick ass soundtrack, and fast gameplay.
Sound -- 10
One of Guilty Gear XX's best features is the music. The music in the game is outstanding. The heavy metal theme goes well with the fighters and the backgrounds. The actually game sounds are nice also. Sammy and Arc Systems decided not to dub the game and kept the original Japanese voices. By keeping the original voices the game has an anime feel to it. As far as the sound effects during gameplay they are pretty standard for a fighting game.
Gameplay -- 9.5
For any 2D fighting game fan GGXX has one of the best engines. The game is simple to learn and has some outstanding minor additions that other games do not have. One example would be the advance blocking. Just like most fighting games these days you have what they call a tension meter. The tension meter has 2 levels and that is how you pull off overdrive attacks. The tension meter can also be used for advance blocking. While pressing two buttons you can do a block that lets you not take damage from any move. Everyone immediately thinks that being able to block all damage is cheap but you can only block all damage as long as you have your tension bar filled up. The game also has what most people call unfair instant kill moves. These are super moves that do the obvious...Instant kill. They have toned down the power of these moves over time and now you have to charge up by pressing all attack buttons then do the special button combination to pull off the move. Most of these moves can be blocked and are easy to predict. The overall speed and button layout makes this game a fun and easy for the casual fighting game fan to the advance. GGXX has a good selection of game modes to keep the game interesting. They have the standard Arcade mode where you choose a character and defeat all the opponents. They also have Survival, Training, and VS. The two new modes they added are Story mode and Mission mode. In story mode you select a character and follow 1 of 3 story lines. Each character will interact with random characters and the more you play story mode the more you learn about the characters. Mission mode is exactly what it sounds like. The game has 50 missions. Each mission you will have a task such as Defeat this person in X amount of time or Stay alive for X amount of time. Most of the missions are extremely difficult and will require lots of patience to complete. With new game modes and new characters Sammy and Arc Systems has once again shown Capcom they are not the only people capable of making outstanding 2D fighting games.
Graphics -- 10
The artwork is amazing in this game. Every detail was looked at when designing the characters. Sure it is not 3D photo realistic graphics but the amount of detail each sprite has is simply amazing. The character design is fantastic and each character has uniqueness. The backgrounds are also 2D and nicely blend with the character animations. One of my favorite things about the game is the menus and transition screens. Each transition seems to flow to another scene with no pauses or glitches. Also GGXX has unlockable art galleries. Every time you beat any of the game modes you get a picture. Each picture shows you more information about each character and are also fun to collect.
Overall -- 10
Guilty Gear XX is an outstanding game that any fighting game fan that owns a PS2 should pick up. The amazing character design to the energetic soundtrack makes this game a must have. The price is also fairly reasonable at $39.99 SRP US.
