Fable First Impressions

The basis by which you percieve RPGs is really what will determine whether or not this is the greatest game in the land.

Here's some of my impressions:

Similar to Grego's XBN Fortune Telling Vision, Fable starts out similar to a life simulator. You'll run around as a small boy, kicking chickens and generally making a nuisance of yourself (as the viewpoint of many townspeople). You're given a simple errand - raise some money for your sister's birthday. Your father being the moral beacon that he is, offers you gold for every good deed you do. Childhood is truly fastpaced, because after no more than an hour (probably less) the plot thickens, and you join the Heroes Guild, awaiting training by a crotchety old man.
Your first competitor turns out to be your room-mate.

Entering into pre-teen/teenager years introduces very little in the way of entertaining quests, as it is still a training sequence. You'll learn the ways of the sword, bow, and will whilst taking on the occasional apple search or pigeon killing. Don't bother entering the pub, as they'll laugh you out of it.

It's gets a little more interesting during the final leg of your training, but ultimately, it's when you accept your first Hero Quest that the "challenges" rise to some degree. However, nothing is really that difficult, so far. The narrator even walks you through your first boss, the Wasp Queen.

The game holds your hand to some extent, as the narrator is always by your side, yelling out the good and bad you do (similar to Bastula in KOTOR), not too mention telling you when your health is critical. Come to think of it, the narrator reminds me of the "voice" of Gauntlet. Elf Sorceress needs health badly.
As you roam farther and farther away from the Heroes Guild, the world gets much more inviting and dark and your choice of weapons gets more appealing. Too bad I can't afford most of it yet! Gold really is dependent on your quest fulfillments, and to accomplish that you need renown. Many of the quests require a certain amount of renown, so early on you'll need to spread your heroics by showing off your prizes. Consider showing off the Queen Wasp Head and Whisper's Brooch.

A life simulator RPG indeed, while there will be heroic quests for your warrior to be, it's often the simple tasks that bring you popularity. Consider helping a baker, the occasional guard, or anyone that passes your fancy.

Odd that many of the heroic quests offer more renown and gold by taking the bad guy's side. Is there something more the that orchard that the Bandits desired three chests?

Combat is actually pretty fun, especially considering it is primarily pressing the "X" button in tangent with the analog stick. It very much reminds me of Sudeki's combat style, as the main character even rolls around to dodge attacks, though I sincerely hope that evolves quickly.
The is the first game I can remember where blocking is a necessary aspect of survival. Sure, you can survive the general bandit and guard fodder by hacking, slashing, and flourishing your way through, but that just won't work against more skilled heroes/villains. Block and attack, roll (get behind them if possible) and attack some more. Good strategy! Will power doesn't seem to serve much purpose one on one, though breaking down the occasional mob with a few well placed arrows or lightning strikes never hurts. I can't wait to try out Assassin's Rush, Fireball, and Force Push (Star Wars anyone?).

Re: Fable First Impressions

I spent 3 hours last night breaking windows and getting drunk and punching people in town last night... but I haven't even spent a dime on fines! I'm the ultimate criminal!

In 3 hours and 20 minutes I already have horns, creepy looking white skin and am now balding which makes my character look evil as all hell. This game RULES! I only wish I didn't have to go to work today... I want to continue being the most ruthless person in albion.

Re: Fable First Impressions

That's bush league Aaron, I'm going to be pure evil from the get go and murder every single thing I can. I'm just going to be the murderous berserker and ravage the land of anything and everything that moves.

Re: Fable First Impressions

Is the game like Shenmue with more action and interactivity?

A lot more action, the interactivity isn't like the capsal toys (which I love) but more of a talk to everyone in the town, punch, kick, get drunk as hell, (which I have made my character DO A LOT, trying to get him a beer gut.) break windows, kick chickens, give people the middle finger, thrust your wasit at wemon (or men if your one of those) and a ton of other things you can do to become evil. I haven't done crap to be good at all... I have done what Vicman has said and killed everyone I can.

Re: Fable First Impressions

So it's a, "pick your mission, and complete it," type game, or are there objectives that you're forced to do to advance the story?
I like the fact that you can mess around with your spare time, but I prefer the missions to be linear.

And would any of you know the EXACT framerate? 60 or 30?

Re: Fable First Impressions

Well there is a main quest you can continue on when you choose. You can also pick your missions from a list and choose based on how mush money and how difficult the mission is. Then after selecting the mission you can choose to stand on a platform and boast about how you intend to perform the mission (In order to get more gold) things like saying "I can do the mission without getting hit" and "I can do the mission naked" are boastable. (As soon as I am done boasting I usualy kill all the people clapping and calling me a hero! ) You cannot save during a mission, well you can but you are only saving your hero data. If you are 1/3 into the mission and have amounted like 50 evil points and someone is like "Hey biatch! Lets go to the mall and get pussy!" you can select save and it will keep all stats you have so far, but when you restart the game again you will have to start that mission over again. (Which I like, makes the game last longer)

I don't know too much about the framerate, but it's pretty smooth to me so far... I will hunt around and see if anyone has commented on it.

I accidently thrust my waist at a guard (the women wouldn't stand still), and he excitedly said, "Wanna buy me a drink?"

I believe it is 30 FPS. As for the missions, it is pretty much that, as there is a Hero's Globe that you can click on which offers you all the mission's Albion has at the moment. A lot of them give you the option to choose sides, such as the Orchard mission, not too mention boasting how you'll do it. The people cheer you on, regardless of what side you choose (even though if you kill the guards, the guildmaster will now say you are E-V-I-L!!).

Re: Fable First Impressions

Nope I'm pretty badass and evil. I was flirting with chicks in a bar when he walked by with a heart over his head and I decided to flirt just for kicks, and he fell in love, problem is I got them all asking for a goddamned ring. Can't you score before marriage in this game!

I think you need a house before any scoring happens... not sure if you can do it before marriage. Just get married, get it on, then kill the biatch.

Re: Fable First Impressions

Re: Fable First Impressions

You have to dress nice and have a nice looking haircut and beard, plus you can't be soooooo evil that you got flies and red stench all around you, if you want da honeys you gotta make a few sacrefices.

It's hilarious having a harem of hoes to beat up on foes who try to fuck with me, schyeah!

Re: Fable First Impressions

Funniest is thing I have read in a thread about Fable:

(This was in a thread on TXB where someone was talking about how they married a gay man and gave him head in Fable.)

In the interests of balance there's another thread here where someone brags about luring a homosexual teacher behind a house and kicking him to death...

When you get there scream as loud as possible and look directly at the employee and then... punch yourself in the crotch as hard as you possibly can. Then crap yourself and start rolling around in a pile of games on the floor.

Can't I just wait in line like all the other people? I'll be wearing my cape, so I don't want to look any more foolish. By the way, the game is $59.99 up here, which isn't too bad. Games usually cost $69.99.
