Film becomes first Japanese animated feature to win an Oscar

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday night at the 75th Annual Academy Awards, Spirited Away captured the “Best Animated Film” award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The film prevailed against the competition of four other nominees: Ice Age, Lilo and Stitch, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and Treasure Planet.

The award was accepted by the academy with no speech. Both Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki were unable to attend the ceremony.

On Feburary 11th, Spirited Away became the first Japanese animated feature to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Film.” Despite grossing only $5.55 million since its limited release on Sept. 20th, the film received almost universal praise from critics.

Winning the Oscar marks the zenith of the film's long string of awards. Spirited Away’s previous awards include Best Film at the 2001 Japanese Academy Awards, Best Animated Feature (among other awards) at the 2002 Annie Awards, Best Animated Feature from Critics’ Awards in New York and Los Angeles, Best Asian Film at the 2002 Hong Kong Film Awards, and Best Film at the Cinekid 2002 International Children's Film Festival.

An April DVD release is currently planned for the film, but its theatrical run could receive a significant boost from the award. Spirited Away’s mainstream potential is promising; in an interview last month with the New York Times, Buena Vista marketing president Oren Aviv stated, "Once the results are in for the Oscars, we, of course, will take another look at releasing [Spirited Away]."

In a night overshadowed by military actions in Iraq, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences proceeded with the awards show. Frank Pierson, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, stated that it was especially important to proceed with the cultural event at a time that American values were being questioned around the world.

Anime News Network will follow and report reactions to Spirited Away's Oscar win, as well as the status of a possible expansion of the theatrical release.

This anime is AWESOME! Back last Halloween AMUK held a Halloween party w/ pumpkin bashing, horror movies, multiplayer gaming, etc. and we all went to the theater as one big group (40 ppl) to watch Spirited Away. Afterwards we talked to the theater management and secured their 8 foot tall cardboard poster for our club!

I just got done watching this movie and thought it was horrible. The only thing that kept me interested is the notion that I might figure out what's going on any second. But even after the film is over I'm just as confused as when I was watching it. If it's so great, tell me why. There was no story to it. The movie just looked like one long ass acid trip.

My cousin was really interested in seeing this because he heard something original finally came out of Japan. But after wasting two hours watching this, we both felt that it was just a rip-off of Alice in Wonderland.

If you like pretty pictures, this movie is for you. If you like plot, story, or a basic understanding of what the hell is going on, go see something else.

You're a moron Catp00p. It was easy to understand. Did you watch it in english or Japanese w/ subtitles? Either way you missed the point of a movie taking a playful yet fantastic look at a girl and her family getting caught in the boundaries between the spirit world and our world, and how those two intertwine. You obviously have little understanding of eastern religion/philosophy or you would have picked up on these concepts easily. Let alone the fact that the movie explores what is true love, loyalty, greed, friendship, etc.

Seems like you just "didn't get it" and thus ripped on it instead of enlightening yourself a bit.

Alice In Wonderland rip-off my ass.

Ho ho ho! Idiot. I've studied philosophy for 6 years now off and on and have more than enough credits at UK to graduate w/ a degree in it, but I've chosen to change majors for chang in interest & economical reasons. If you were lost you didn't pay attention. The movie was very easy to follow. You "missed it" and unless you ride the short bus that's kinda hard to do. Seems to me your biased more than anything w/ your "something original finally came out of Japan" statement.

I have an excellent understanding of eastern cultures. Probably more than most since I have been exposed heavily to it since I was 12.

I watched it in subs, since I don't watch any anime in english.

There were two of us watching it and both of us were very lost. Where did you learn your eastern philosophy? From anime?

You are one of them art fags aren't you? Other people liked it so you liked it.

Vicman, you have to be the most annoying person I have ever met, and I really haven't met you. You try way to hard to be funny and act like the rest of us and you come off like a giant dildo. The thing is we have all known each other for a long time, and you start trying to be cool and acting like us the second we meet you. That's how I know you're an art-***. You called me a moron cause I don't think like you. Are we all supposed to have the same opionion as Vicman? I thought we called that Nazism.

Maybe if you toned it down a little, or stop trying so hard to act like everyone else you wouldn't be so damn annoying.

Totally uncalled for. I called you a "moron" I didn't pseudo-psychologize your character from little to no info like you just did. You gave few real reasons for your dislike and presented your opinion just like a moron would. Making extreme comments w/o good reasons. It displayed bias, and ignorance. You futher pushed it by this lil tirade fit for a angst ridden teen.
Calling you a moron might not have been the best way to go about this but you've proven my point.

tis a GREAT movie imo ...THerefore winning itself a OSCAR ...

btw vicman what did the cardboard cutout thingy look like ? Was it the little girl or what?

On one side it has the main character with typical ancient japanese style sliding doors behind her. on the back it has pictures of the film, creator, and info on the movie. It's huge! We've used it to display AMUK on several occasions and it really draws people.

Yeah, seems now that Spirited Away won the Oscar for best Animated feature of the year Disney is really putting forth a push and re-releasing it to theaters (800 to be exact) as well as actually putting out commercials. About damned time! I was one of the few that went to see it on it's first run (151 theaters) and you know I'll be going to watch it again! :D
