When did people start nit picking Special FX?
FX have been commented on for quite a while but seems more and more people are looking to spot the CGI within movies. It seems like this started to have a major increase since The Ring remake came out. I keep seeing comments in people's impressions of films like "Oh that scene was great but I could tell such n' such a part was CGI." I don't think the people saying that are saying it took away from the scene but it's like they feel the need to show they could pick out the difference between the real actor or CGI one such as in the Matrix Reloaded fight scene with Agent Smith. In contrast the movies Independance Day or Men in Black were heavily FX driven but I didn't notice the "Oh that's CGI." comment as much.
I'm not sure if this is necessarily a good or bad thing but it just seems odd to me. In the early days of film I doubt there were many film expert wannabes in the theater informing people "Oh that's just stop motion photography." during King Kong. Or watching the Empire Strikes Back on it's original premiere night and your friend telling that while it was a good movie he could tell that some of the backgrounds were just matte paintings or he wished the stop motion use to make the Imperial Walkers could have been a little smoother.
It seems like movies were once a form of escapism entertainment but is now for modern audiences it has become an art critique.
