When did people start nit picking Special FX?

FX have been commented on for quite a while but seems more and more people are looking to spot the CGI within movies. It seems like this started to have a major increase since The Ring remake came out. I keep seeing comments in people's impressions of films like "Oh that scene was great but I could tell such n' such a part was CGI." I don't think the people saying that are saying it took away from the scene but it's like they feel the need to show they could pick out the difference between the real actor or CGI one such as in the Matrix Reloaded fight scene with Agent Smith. In contrast the movies Independance Day or Men in Black were heavily FX driven but I didn't notice the "Oh that's CGI." comment as much.

I'm not sure if this is necessarily a good or bad thing but it just seems odd to me. In the early days of film I doubt there were many film expert wannabes in the theater informing people "Oh that's just stop motion photography." during King Kong. Or watching the Empire Strikes Back on it's original premiere night and your friend telling that while it was a good movie he could tell that some of the backgrounds were just matte paintings or he wished the stop motion use to make the Imperial Walkers could have been a little smoother.

It seems like movies were once a form of escapism entertainment but is now for modern audiences it has become an art critique.

I think people are just talking out there ass. Back then corny things were viable because no one had the technology and now that it's advancing i think people figure they can pick it out. But big deal, it's obviously hard getting someone to do what spider-man did in CGI , that would be really freaking hard/impossible.

They like to critique stuff just to do it, it's like people who say something sucks without no basis for their opinion. In some instances stuff would be hard to do without it.

I hope I don't start doing that. I'd feel like I was turning into a movie snob.

It's like those idiots who would go to see "Mission Impossible 2" and they yell when tom cruise is grinding on his shoes that it's bull shit and you can't do that in real life!

Well duh for god sakes, the movie is there to give you a sense of escapism, it's different when the movie is inherently dubbed science fictional. But i can see someone going to see the "The Transporter" and yelling bull crap when he lands in that car carrier. But the movie is a total work of fiction, the real laws do not apply it's the point!

Some people need to understand that there is money involved and there is some things a human can not just do...

I see it as an originally small occurance that has become an emerging clique in the movie audience. They like to display their dubious skill at picking out the Computer FX.

I soppose the same thing occurs to a certain extent with any other form of entertainment, particularly music. This can be good or bad. People who are knowledgable of music can be interesting to talk to as you can often discover new music you like from them. I know someone at work like this and I've learned of a lot of cool bands like Sigur Ros from him. Or the person could have a bad attitude and become an Elitist music expert. They will be knowledgable of music but consider anyone who listens to anything in the remotely taboo Mainstream to be poor ignorant sheep who listen to anything because they aren't enlightened like they are.

(I'm not sure why I'm in a weird editorial mood tonight)

The same can be said about video gamers who nit-pick every little graphical difference and say "such and such game" sucks because it doesn't have bump mapping to the Nth degree that "so and so game" does. We see it everyday, ppl who think themselves elitists at some form of entertainment and go out of their way to be obnoxious and point out imperfections in what is ment to be enjoyed. As if those little things are really all that important.
