What is a good starter album for U2?

I haven't really heard much of U2's music before but I was impressed with the song they contributed to The Gangs of New York soundtrack. During the ending and credits they played sort of a orchestra cover of the song that was fantastic.

I looked them up on Amazon and I guess they have two main Best Of collections. Would that be the best way to go or just buy their most recent album?

Looking at the discography of the band, and IMO, the best of early years is just basically the Joshua Tree with the Sweetest Thing single on it over and over again.

I'm not a big fan of the later stuff, with a few exceptions. I would suggest a local used CD spot, and grab Joshua Tree. The song With or without you, almost always brings chills to my spine, and occasionally a tear.

I decided to pick up both The Gangs of New York soundtrack disk and the Joshua Tree. I'm really pleased with both of them though I wish Gangs of NY had the original version of Peter Gabriel's Signal to Noise.
