PS2 Price Drops To $149

The PlayStation 2's price dropped to $149 today, with the announcement coming at Sony Computer Entertainment America's E3 press conference.
The new price point applies to both the PlayStation 2 core system and the already-available Combo Pack, which includes a Network Adaptor and a copy of ATV Offroad Fury 2, suggesting that Sony may soon sell nothing but Network Adaptor bundles. However, it apparently does not apply to the separate Online Pack bundle. SCEA's Kaz Hirai noted that the PS2 sold almost 10 times as well as the original PlayStation at its initial $299 price point, and six times as well at the lower $199 price point. It also sold steadily for longer periods of time at those price points -- 20 months at the first price, compared to nine for the original PSX, and 22 at the $199 price, compared to only six for the original PSX. The PSX didn't become a breakout hit until the $149 price point -- some 90% of its installed base was bought at $149 or less. The PS2's fortunes at its new price point thus look fairly bright.
