[Ghost Recon] Review...

Ghost Recon: Review

Opening Comments:
This is one of the best online games I have ever played.
Some people may think "A tactical game? Boring...". It is
not like that at all! Read on for the complete analysis.

GamePlay:
I would first like to mention that the gameplay in Ghost
Recon is very balanced. Everything seems to work well
together. When you play, it just seems as if everything
is right where it is supposed to be.

If you're used to playing Unreal Championship or Halo
(who isn't?) then the controls in Ghost Recon will take
a bit of practice before you master them. However, the
control scheme is simaler to Halo but the way it is
implemented is different. Ghost Recon is also slower
than Halo, even though Halo isn't that fast to begin
with. Once you get the hang of the controls, you're
all set.

One of my favorite things about Ghost Recon is the
inclusion of Xbox Live support. I'm a big fan of Xbox
Live. While it is tough to find an online game in Ghost
Recon, once you do, it is great fun. The is very little
to no lag in this game. Also, the added voice feature
is just what this game needed, it is what the PC
version lacked so badly. Nothing like trash-talking to
your opponents. ;)

The Campaign Mode is also great. There are many
missions to keep you busy for days, maybe even
weeks. To play a campaign you must create a
dossier which takes absolutely no effort. After you
have created your dossier you can begin your
campaign. There are a few difficulty settings for this
mode depending on how good you are. I personally
always start on the easiest and work my way up.

In Campaign Mode there are fifty tasks you can
complete to unlock anything from new soldiers to
new levels and cheats. No cheat codes here,
everything must be worked for. When you get the
spoils you feel like you really accomplished some-
thing.

Graphics:
The graphics in Ghost Recon are slightly above
average but they work very well. The character
models are excellent and the textures that are
housed on the characters are pretty darn sharp.
You'll definitely get that realistic feeling with the
characters.

The levels do look good as well. However, there
are parts in many of the levels that are clunky and
very polygonal, as in they are not smooth. But the
levels are great. They are extremely large and it is
nice. However, because of the size of the levels
there is that horrible draw-in draw-out technique.

Foggy levels are the worst. Sometimes an enemy
will be far off in the distance and you cannot see
them but they can still shoot you. However, it is
really not too big of a flaw, as it doesn't take away
from the fun factor.

Most of the level textures are pretty sharp but
there are some parts that look pretty icky. I think
the developer did a good job managing the Xbox's
resources. The game runs at a cool 30 frames per
second and I have not seen one drop yet. Even
though the graphics aren't super high quality, I
believe that you will enjoy them anyways.

Audio:
There is very little music in this game, in fact,
during gameplay, the music is almost non-existent.
There is mainly music in the Main Menu and briefing
screens. The in-game sound is amazing. The ambient
sounds are quite nice. The developer really makes
you feel as if you're actualy on a Russian battlefield.
Instead of music you hear things like your team mates
running across the field or the sound of your body
moving over the foliage on the ground. The water
sound is very fluid, it really sounds like water flowing.

I believe that the weapon sounds could have been
a bit more thrilling. They are average at best. One of
my favorite guns is the machine gun, I believe it has
the best sound out of them all. As in, it sounds the
most realistic.

Overall, the ambient sounds and the chatter of your
Russian enemies really pulls you in to the world of
Ghost Recon. I think you will enjoy it very much.

Multi-Player:
Ah, my favorite part of the game. Ghost Recon
completely supports Xbox Live with the exception of
downloadable content. Voice, friends list, universal
game invites, etc... It is all there and it is easily
accessible. Want to check your friends list? Press
START and select 'Online Options'. Very simple.

Playing this game on Xbox Live with 'real' people
is truely an experience you just should not miss out
on. There is nothing like blasting away your buddies
while talking trash until you're blue in the face.

The off-line Multi-Player is just as fun as the on-
line Multi-Player game. If you got a buddy, you can
go head-to-head in Split-Screen or you can do a
Co-Op against the computer with your buddy.
Either way, it is really fun. You can really get
sucked in to the game this way. You'll find your-
self holding off going to the bathroom so you can
finish just one more round.

In a nutshell, Ghost Recon online is fun and really
immersive. The Campaign Mode is great but you will
really feel good about your purchase when you fire
up the Multi-Player Mode.

Closing Comments:
If you're into shooting games with that realistic
edge, then this game is definitely for you. If you
want to play 50 missions of stealthy mayhem, then
this game is also for you. I have played SOCOM:
Navy Seals and I must say Ghost Recon is the
winner here. It is at the very least worth a rental.
