anyone have a clue as to why my dsl download is sooo slow?

we just got SBC yahoo the other day 'cause roadrunner never worked well for us and this was cheaper so we thought we'd try it.

well it sucks pretty much. overall everything is just a lot slower, it's almost like 56k. and the download is ridiculous, it is 56k. music downloads go no faster than 3 or 4kb a second, usually they go 1 to 2kb a second. and downloading programs from the net.... yeah, those are ridiculously slow.

anyway, just wondering if anyone had any idea why it's so slow or if you have any personal experience with SBC yahoo dsl. my dad said something about the speed should increase if we route it with a fastcat ethernet cable rather than the phone line it's hooked up with now. that makes sense, but im not aware of how dsl is set up 'cause im only really familiar with roadrunner. im really hoping that improves the situation.

"pray. for. mojo."

last time i tried to do one of those download speed tests my computer couldnt even run the test

i tried www.2wire.com . but i guess ill try this one to see.

in a bit im gonna take one of my 50 foot ethernet cables and take it from this elaborate setup i have right now. it's going to be a bitch but it'll be worth it if we can find out how much the speed increase is. and if it doesnt improve the situation at all im going to cry because i have slow internet and i have to re-network my setup, lol.

oh yeah, third opinion needed, preferably from someone like sonic who went from crappy computer to good computer: do you think computer specs could have a big effect on the overall speed of my connection? this downstairs computer is pretty lousy too, an 800 mhz amd duron with 128MB ram. maybe if we upgraded itd be a lot faster?

*Insta-Shane-Memory!!*

The first 2 or 3 days that I had just gotten my broadband the speeds were terrible, like 128/13 or some shit like that, maybe yours is doing the same..?

LMFAO

Heh, trust me, wait a few days and if it does not pick up then start complaining to the company. Mine was extra slow at the beginning as well.

OMFG. honestly i cant believe the shit i have to go through with all these damn connection problems. cant connect to live at all, i can barely use the internet... im pissed. :thehell:

shane do you have dsl or roadrunner?

UGH.

I have cable, Charter Communications serves it and they suck cack, corporate bastards  We pay like $40 a month for barebone broadband connection speeds..

sonic whenever you start talking about filters and stuff.... wth are you talking about?

my dad says he installed all the filters the right way. :(

no we dont have a phone with 2 phone lines...

we do have some really old phone wire as part of our setup though. that's what we're trying to replace with the cat5 cable.

im thinking a brick through their office window would express our impatience better than the 5000th phone call we've made :D

hmmm... the other day my dead plugged the phone cable into a newer surge protector we got last year instead of this really old one, and our download went from 20 to 153. still not good by any means but at least the net goes at a decent speed now, which is all i really use the connection for. maybe i could get the rest of the speed back if we'd just have newer hardware....
