A Jessica Lynch Movie?

Source: FilmJerk

As U.S. Army Private Jessica Lynch arrived in West Virginia today, replete with a hero’s homecoming, FilmJerk.com has learned that the production of “Saving Jessica Lynch: The Rescue of an American Soldier” is set to begin August 25 for an NBC movie of the week focusing on the soldier’s tale, although a director and a location have not been set. Our source also tells us that an offer is out to an actress to portray Lynch, but will not reveal whom. We have also become privy to, via our sources, descriptions of the people/characters found in the telefilm.

Lynch was called a hero after her dramatic rescue from an Iraqi hospital, although new information recently come to light has called into question some of the reportage found within initial media reports. Tentatively planning to air the series in either the November 2003 or February 2004 sweeps period, NBC is doing the movie without exclusive rights. Interestingly, producers are loglining this as “the true story” of the events surrounding her capture and rescue.

Among the characters currently being cast for the movie of the week include the married Iraqi couple that helps the U.S. release her, Lynch’s parents and her military roommate who meets with fate in Iraq.

In their entirety, the characters descriptions read:

Mohammed Odeh Al-Rehaief: A handsome and refined Iraqi man, Odeh Al-Rehaief is a lawyer married to a nurse who works at the hospital in Nasiriyah. The father of a six year old daughter, Abeer, he is in his 30s. According to the casting notes, he is “an intelligent, caring, educated and well-spoken man,” deeply unsettled when he sees how prisoner of war Lynch is being treated while being held at the hospital. Unnerved to think how he would feel if his own daughter had met the same fate, he opts to risk everything to tell the U.S. authorities where to find the missing young soldier. He clearly believes that Iraq is a dangerous place while Saddam is in power.

Iman: Mohammed’s wife, and mother to his six year old son, she is a nurse at the hospital in Nasiriyah. Iman is both scared and angry when she learns that her husband has gone to the American authorities regarding the whereabouts of Lynch. After being visited by the Ba’ath militia, she realizes that her family’s life is in serious jeopardy. However, she soon comes to realize what prompted her husband’s seemingly rash decision, and supports him unequivocally. She even helps the U.S. with their plot to rescue Jessica.

Greg Lynch, Sr.: A burly truck driver, he is Jessica’s good-hearted, proud father and the patriarch of his West Virginia family. He’s filled with emotion as his two oldest, Jessica included, take off for their respective army bases. He reminds Jessica, “You remember where you came from…” During the time that Jessica is reported missing in action, he remains stoically optimistic, convinced deep down that his little girl is alive and well. Upon learning that Jessica has been found and rescued, he lets the tears come.

Deadre “Dee” Lynch: She is Greg’s wife and Jessica’s loving mother. A bit puzzled, but clearly proud that her two oldest kids have joined the army, she tells them, “I still don’t know what’s gotten into the two of you.” Understandably shaken and terrified to learn that the Iraqis have captured her daughter, she leans on her husband emotionally, and looks to him for strength and reassurance.

Lori Piestewa: At 22 years old, this Native American from Arizona is Jessica’s friend, roommate and fellow soldier. A spirited, good-natured young woman, recently divorced and the mother of two young children, she tells a local newswoman that “Soldiering is in my blood.” Later, she is killed in action when Iraqi tanks ambush her squad.

Dr. Hamida Al-Radi: Al-Radi is Iman’s sister and a doctor at the hospital in Nasiriyah. She tells Odeh Al-Rehaief that an American POW, Jessica Lynch, is being held at the hospital. She even allows Odeh Al-Rehaief to briefly visit the captured young woman. Later, this brave doctor leads Navy SEALs to the morgue where they find the bodies of downed American soldiers.

Commander Curry: He is a grizzled Marine Base Commander in Iraq, who is puzzled at first when Odeh Al-Rehaief seeks to help the Americans with their rescue of a POW. A careful and intelligent fellow, he comes to trust the Iraqi completely, amazed that Odeh Al-Rehaief and his wife have risked so much to help the captured woman. However, he warns Odeh Al-Rehaief that there hasn’t been a successful rescue of a POW in fifty years.

Lt. General David McKiernan: The Third US Army/US Army Forces Central Command and the Coalition Forces Land Component Command’s Lieutenant General, he is a lean and thoughtful man who heads up the Coalition Forces Land Component. Operating out of the War Room in Kuwait, he is upset to learn that troops have entered Nasiriyah before the Marines. However, as he puts it, “There’s a lot of things that aren’t supposed to be happening that are happening in this war. Let’s just get this game over as quickly as we can.” He later gives the rescue operation the green light. This character only appears in 6 scenes.

The Mullah: Appearing in only two scenes, this Muslim cleric is a friend and neighbor of Odeh Al-Rehaief. He, too, bemoans what has happened to his country since Saddam took power. Later, he intervenes, hoping to circumvent trouble when the Ba’ath militia come to Odeh Al-Rehaief’s home and threaten to arrest Iman and their daughter. He then warns Iman to leave immediately.

A Private First Class with the 507th Maintenance Company, Lynch was rescued April 1 from an Iraqi-held hospital in an Iraqi southern town, Nasiriyah, where she was held for more than a week. Iraqi forces had ambushed her company on March 23 after it took a wrong turn near Nasiriyah. When rescued she had a broken arm, two broken legs, spinal injuries, and damage to her foot and ankle.

Within the past month, Viacom came under fire for offering a package to Lynch, dangling a movie, network television, several MTV projects and a book deal to beat rivals to an interview with Lynch, raising questions on news divisions’ independence. In a statement, CBS News rebuffed suggestions that it was compromising its independence or journalistic standards.
